PROJECT OVERVIEW

The project began with a request from TechnologyAdvice's email marketing team. They wanted a memorable brand for "The Buzzkill," a newsletter that delivered hard HR truths. The project's true challenge, however, appeared mid-project when the name was scrapped.

THE BUZZKILL

My first designs embraced the "Buzzkill" idea. I drew a bee mascot in a classic rubber hose style, looking sharp in a little tie and glasses. With its custom logotype and high-contrast colors, the identity had the perfect amount of sass and sting.

THE BUZZKILL

My first approach was to fully embrace the edgy brief. I designed a sassy bee mascot in a vintage rubber hose animation style, complete with a tiny tie and glasses. Paired with a custom hand-lettered logotype and a striking color palette, the identity perfectly captured the "Buzzkill" vibe.

HR FOR HUMANS

Just as the team was getting excited about the bee, the project took a sharp turn. The name "Buzzkill" was voted out for its negative connotations. In its place was "HR for Humans," a name that needed the exact opposite tone. It was the ultimate design challenge: how do you start over from zero?

MEET CYBORK

My answer was Cybork! He’s a charming robot dog in a necktie and the new mascot for the newsletter. With his handdrawn, cartoon features, who could resist opening an email from that friendly face? (Also, I based him off my IRL dog, Bjork).

IMPACT & TAKEAWAYS

The new branding with Cybork connected with everyone. It gave the newsletter a relatable character in a way the edgier bee never could. This whole experience showed me the value of being adaptable. Sometimes the tightest constraints push you toward the best solution.
